Brazil and Univision Chicago are Both Winners of the 2002 FIFA World Cup

Univision Chicago’s coverage of the Final World Cup match between Germany & Brazil out-delivered WLS/ABC’s head to head coverage


Chicago, IL -- Brazil may be the 2002 FIFA World Cup Champ, but Univision Chicago/WGBO is the Ratings Champ.  According to Nielsen Station Index, Univision Chicago’s coverage of the Final 2002 World Cup match between Germany and Brazil on Sunday, June 30th at 6-8am achieved a 4.0 TV household rating, beating WLS/ABC’s head to head coverage, which delivered a 3.8 TV household rating.  Univision Chicago’s 2002 World Cup Final also outperformed its 1998 World Cup Final delivery by a whopping 56%.  In 1998, the World Cup Final between Brazil and France at 10am-12:45pm on Univision Chicago reached 87,000 TV households, while the 2002 Final World Cup match at 6-8am reached 136,000 TV households.

Not only did Univision Chicago’s coverage of the Final World Cup match outperform WLS/ABC’s head to head coverage, but it also out-delivered other major sporting events that took place later in the day on Sunday, June 30th.

WMAQ/NBC 11am-2pm Wimbledon Tennis = 1.8 TV household rating
WMAQ/NBC 2-5pm U.S. Senior Open Golf = 2.4 TV household rating
WLS/ABC 2-5pm St. Jude Golf Classic = 2.0 TV household rating
WBBM/CBS 2:30-5pm CART Grand Prix of Chicago Auto Race = 1.5 TV household rating

Univision Chicago’s ratings success was even greater among Hispanic TV households.  According to Nielsen’s Hispanic Station Index, the Final World Cup match at 6-8am between Germany and Brazil achieved a 25.2 Hispanic household rating.  And when combined with TeleFutura Chicago/WXFT’s encore presentation of the World Cup Final at 12-2pm (6.4 Hispanic household rating), Univision Chicago and TeleFutura Chicago make a winning combination delivering a 31.6 combined Hispanic household rating.
