Univision 45 Recipient of 3 Lone Star Emmys

KXLN only Spanish-language station in Houston to receive award


Houston, TX -- KXLN-TV Univision 45 won three Emmys of the four the station was nominated for in this year’s 2004 Emmy Awards by the National Television Academy, Lone Star Chapter.  This achievement marked KXLN as the only Spanish-language Emmy recipient in the city of Houston.  “Noticias 45”, KXLN’s 5 and 10 p.m. news program, received the three Emmys in the following categories: “Specialty Assignment Report”, “Specialty Assignment Reporter” and “Outstanding Documentary Program”.  

“Our news team always strives to provide the best news programming for the community,” Noticias 45 News Director Deanna Landron stated, “and receiving these 3 Emmys proves that we do accomplish this.”  KXLN Vice-President and General Manager Craig Bland added, “We are extremely proud of our news team. Their professionalism, drive, and unique knowledge of our community have always made them standout from our very capable competition. The Emmys are but the icing on the cake.”

The award-winning entries are:

“Election Immigrant Workers/Mayoral Candidate”, a news story about poll workers who believed an injustice occurred when they showed up to work and stated that they were not paid by the contractor hired by the campaign of a 2003 Houston candidate.  The story was produced by reporter/anchor Patricio Espinoza, photographer/editor Arturo Rubio, photographer Cristian Luna, and editor Enrique del Valle. It won the Emmy Award in the Specialty Assignment Report category.

"En Su Defensa" (In Your Defense) news stories, dealing with issues ranging from consumer fraud, immigration related scams to civil rights violations and other injustices, by reporter/anchor Patricio Espinoza. It won an Emmy in the Specialty Assignment Reporter category.

“Los Niños Perdidos de Honduras” (The Lost Children of Honduras), a series of six news stories presenting the hardships, ruthless environment and way of survival of the orphaned and homeless children of Honduras, by anchor/reporter Amalia Torres and photographer/editor Arturo Rubio. It received an Emmy Award in the Outstanding Documentary Program category.

The winners were announced at the 2004 Lone Star Emmy Awards Gala held Saturday, October 16 at the Hilton Americas in Houston.

The Lone Star Emmy Awards is composed of nominations from small and large markets throughout Texas in the television industry, the categories ranging from news to public affairs and promotions to public service campaigns.  The Lone Star Emmy Awards also looks to acknowledge the achievements and journalistic skills of the professionals in this field.

The Lone Star Chapter was created in 2002 to serve and tailor to the needs of professionals and students dedicated to television broadcasting in the state of Texas.  This Texas chapter forms part of the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, which functions as a leading source in the advancement of television and is the distributor of the coveted Emmy Awards.
