Univision Network News Investigates America’s Obsession with Weight

One-hour special – “Un Problema Gordo” - examines obesity’s risks and ramifications

Miami, FL -- Univision puts America to the test: does society really place too much pressure on body size? On October 14 at 10pm (9pm Central), the Univision Network News primetime special “Un Problema Gordo” (A Big Fat Problem) investigates three fundamental issues regarding America’s obsession with weight: its health risks, its challenges and its negative undertone.

Hosted by Univision network anchor Maria Elena Salinas, this one-hour program delves into America's mania over obesity, a national epidemic that also affects 60% of the Hispanic community.  It also monitors the weight loss of three Hispanics - two of whom try different weight loss programs while the other undergoes gastric by-pass surgery.  Although the results are astonishing, Salinas looks into whether or not weight loss is the key to happiness.

And how does America view obese people? Hidden cameras follow two attractive thin people in certain social situations; later, the same individuals are transformed by foam rubber to make them appear 100 pounds heavier.  Salinas confirms that people with larger body sizes are treated differently, both socially and in the workplace.

But not everyone sees being overweight as a “problema.”  Many have learned to accept their size and are happy with who they are despite the issues and image problems they face on a daily basis.

Featuring viewpoints from celebrities such as Univision host Raul De Molina, Mexican comedian Sheila and former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, “Un Problema Gordo” airs Thursday, October 14 at 10pm (9pm Central).
