Univision Records Artists Nominated to 47th Grammy Awards

Pioneering Latin Hip Hop Sensation Akwid, Cachao and Son De Cali Garner 2005 Grammy Nominations

Woodland Hills, CA -- For a second consecutive year, leading Latin Hip Hop superstars Akwid, garnered an important Grammy(R) nod in the Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album category for their Univision Records follow-up album “KOMP 104.9 Radio Compa,” which debuted at No.2 on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums Chart on July 3, 2004.

In addition, Univision Records obtained two important nods in other genres: in the Best Latin Traditional Tropical Album category Israel López “Cachao” was nominated for his “¡Ahora Sí!” album, which was produced by actor-producer Andy García.  García produced Cachao’s three previous albums, which were all Grammy-nominated, including the 1992 Grammy award-winning “Master Sessions, Vol. 1.”  Colombian Salsa duet Son De Cali received a nomination in the Best Salsa or Merengue Album with their sophomore effort “Creciendo.”

Without a doubt, these nominations are an irrevocable corroboration of Univision Records’ musical versatility and its ongoing effort to be at the vanguard of identifying and developing new artists and new music genres, clearly evidenced by its leading role in, and commitment to the unparalleled success found in the Urban Regional movement.

For AKWID, the year 2004 has represented the consolidation of an unmatched success, ranging from the accreditation of Latin Platinum Album status for their follow up album “KOMP 104.9 Radio Compa”, which sold more than 200,000 units in less than a month, and sales in excess of 400,000 units to date of their debut album “Proyecto Akwid”, which garnered them a Latin Gold and Latin Platinum Album certification, to a 2004 Latin Billboard Award for Regional Mexican Album of The Year, New Artist.  Furthermore, this year Akwid also received nominations in two important categories of the 2004 Latin Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Urban Music Album.

“This Grammy nomination is nothing but a confirmation of Sergio and Francisco’s talent and the artistic value they have contributed to Latin music in this country.  I would like to congratulate them for this important nomination and for the very well deserved acknowledgement on behalf of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences,” stated Jose Behar, President & CEO, Univision Music Group.

Considered by many to be one of Latin music’s most pioneering and daring artists of the 21st Century, Akwid has revolutionized Latin music by fusing two cultures and two music genres in a transcending way.  Akwid represents the new sound of Latin alternative music in the U.S., Puerto Rico and Mexico, where they continue making waves at an accelerated pace topping radio airplay and sales charts.
Akwid’s talent and music potential has not gone unnoticed, and recently, the duo snared two nominations for the upcoming Los Angeles based Que Buena Awards, where they are nominated for Best Urban Regional Song, for their second single “Muñeca Fea” (Ugly Doll) and Urban Regional Artist of the Year.  Akwid will attend the award ceremony, which will be taking place on Wednesday, December 8, 2004 at the Universal Amphitheater.

Currently, Akwid is promoting its second single “Muñeca Fea” and continues a promotional tour throughout the U.S.
