Univision 45 Wins American Cancer Society’s Texas Media Award

Beatriz De Alvarado and Mariano Garcia, from Noticias 45 in Houston, attain top honor in Spanish-Audience Category

Houston, TX -- Univision Noticias 45 senior anchor/reporter Beatriz De Alvarado and news photojournalist Mariano Garcia are recipients of the American Cancer Society’s 2004 Texas Media Award in the Spanish-Audience category.  The award winning entry “En Busca de Una Esperanza” (In Search of Hope) is a three-part news series special about the struggles and journeys of four different families dealing with their child’s fight against cancer and the wonderful services and cutting-edge medical research that St. Jude’s Hospital in Memphis, Tennessee provides.

“No one can forget the emotional stories that both Beatriz and Mariano brought back from their trip and it is very rewarding to know that this story made as much of an impact on others as it did on everyone at the station”, said Noticias 45 News Director Deanna Landron.”  Beatriz De Alvarado said about her experience, “Covering news stories such as this one, of families sticking together, fighting for what they need and not losing hope, can only fill you with awe and admiration, and this is what Mariano and I hoped to convey with the series.”

The American Cancer Society (ACS) is one of the largest and most recognized volunteer health agencies in the country.  ACS helps promote research, education, advocacy, and service in order to prevent cancer, aid those who are suffering from the disease, and get closer to eliminating it as a major health problem.

In order to applaud the media’s role in educating and informing the public about cancer and of those who are affected by it, ACS holds its annual Texas Media Awards Competition.  Radio, newspaper, magazine and television journalists from large and small markets are invited to submit their cancer-related story in either news or feature/human interest categories.

Beatriz De Alvarado was born in Mexico City and studied Journalism/Communication in the Guadalajara Autonomous University.  Beatriz has been the 5 p.m. news anchor since the KXLN Noticias 45’s first newscast in April of 1990.  From late 1987 to early 1990, Beatriz co-hosted the first Spanish-language variety television program in Houston, “Variadisimo”.  As a correspondent, she covered historical events such as Pope John Paul VI’s visit to Mexico in 1999 and the Mexican Elections of 2000 for KXLN and other affiliates of Univision.  Currently, Beatriz is the Managing Editor and Senior Anchor of Noticias 45 and host of the public affairs show “Nuestra Vida”.

Mariano García was born in El Salvador, where he began his career that covers more than twenty years as a news photojournalist. He covered a large part of the war in El Salvador before moving to Houston.  García joined KXLN-TV Univision 45 in January 1999.
